What is ISO 7010?
Safety signs have gone through some major design changes in recent years with the introduction of ISO 7010. ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) 7010 specifies
the shape, colour and graphical symbol required on safety signs. New common symbols were tested and introduced throughout all European countries to ensure the symbols
are easily understood and recognised across all European Union countries. ISO 7010 was created in 2003, with the intention to use common, internationally recognised symbols on
safety signs. Until now, this has been a ‘recommendation’ and so the UK has continued to abide by our own standard, BS5499.
Why was it created?
ISO 7010 was created to ensure that safety signs are understood by everyone, regardless of native language, poor eyesight, reading difficulties or other disabilities. By using
internationally recognised symbols (pictograms) it means a sign informing you to wear protective clothing or warning you of a danger will look the same in the UK as it will in any other
European country. A pictogram is “a symbol that represents a word, object or concept”.
So what is EN 7010 and when will it be effective?
From January 2013 this looks set to change as ISO 70 10 could become a European Normative – EN 7010. This means it will be written into European Law that the UK and other
countries from the EU will have to abide by. This will mean big implications for businesses. We will not know the real impact of this until the BSI releases further information. We will

What do I do next?
EN 7010 will apply to all workplaces, sectors and locations that are required by law to display health and safety information. There will be some exceptions of some specialist signs
used in guiding transport such as: rail, road, river, maritime and air traffic. The safest way to make sure your business is showing the correct information by law is to follow the latest
safety sign guidance and therefore symbols may need to be updated. You can see some examples of some of the changes on the next page.Fire SignsWhite symbols are added inside the shape that
